The poll results (below) seem to confirm that many data miners are more interesting in analysis of social networks than in participating The results were:

42% said: just analyze, but not participate
37% - both analyze and participate
9% - just participate, but not analyz
10% - neither analyze nor participate

This poll what I saw at KDD-2010 conference , where social networks analysis was a hot topic, yet kdd10.crowdvine.com social network for the conference was barely active, even though you could sign in with facebook or twitter accounts.
