The SIAM Conference on Data Mining (SDM 2011) is pleased to announce
the availability of a limited number of student travel scholarships to
cover the registration and travel expenses for students participating
in SDM 2011 for:
- Participants in the SDM Doctoral Forum
- Student authors of papers that have been accepted for presentation at SDM 2011
This year's Doctoral Forum will build on the success of the previous
Forums. It will provide an opportunity for Ph.D. students working on
topics related to data mining and knowledge discovery to discuss and
receive feedback on their research from peers and senior practitioners
in the field. The Doctoral Forum will be an integral part of the SDM
program, and will provide a constructive atmosphere for these
students. Special consideration will be given to attendees who are
women or members of minority groups that are currently
underrepresented in the Computer Science research community.
The Doctoral Forum is distinct from the poster session, and the work
presented to the Forum must be distinct from the work included in the
Proceedings of the SDM Conference. Preference will be given to
students who have advanced to Ph.D. candidacy. For both the travel
scholarships and the Doctoral Forum, local students who live within 30
miles of the conference venue will receive only registration expenses.
Applications should include:
+ Completed Application form
+ A letter of recommendation from the student's Ph.D. advisor, verifying the student status of the applicant, date of advance to Ph.D. candidacy, and the expected date of thesis defense or graduation.
+ In addition, students who wish to participate in the
Doctoral Forum must include a 1--2 page abstract summarizing their
dissertation research with their application. The abstract must
include:
- Problem description, background, and significance
- Novelty relative to the state of the art (related work and their shortcomings)
- Approach, data, methods
