Consumer Analytics is still the leading application area for analytics & data mining (although losing its share), followed by Finance, and Banking. Highest growth is in Games, Entertainment/Music, and Social Good/Non-profit applications. 3-year comparison shows surprising stability.

Consumer analytics The most popular areas are
  • CRM/Consumer analytics (still n. 1, but declining to only 18.6% share from 22.2% in 2014)
  • Finance (up 42%, was n8 in 2014)
  • Banking (down 15%, was n2 in 2014)
  • Health care (down 18%, was no 3 in 2014)
  • Science (down 14%, was n. 4-7 in 2014)

 
New areas were added in 2014 poll, based on industry trends and comments on past polls. Most popular are:
  • IT / Network Infrastructure, 6.6%
  • Mining, 3.7% (yes, actual mining, not just data mining)
  • Agriculture, 2.9%

 
Comparing to Where did you apply Analytics/Data Mining in 2014? poll, we note that the biggest increases, computed as (pct2015 - pct2015) / pct2014, were for
  • Games, 121% Games 240
  • Entertainment / Music/ TV/Movies, 73.6%
  • Social, Good/Non-profit, 68.4%
  • Finance, 42.1%
  • Education, 30.0%

 
The industries with the biggest decline in share of applications were
  • Junk email / Anti-spam, down 84%
  • Mobile apps, down 37%
  • Retail, down 33%
  • Direct Marketing/ Fundraising, down 29%

 
Average number of industries selected per voter was 2.65, slightly lower than 2.8 in 2014.
