Background
The Institute for Information Technology (NRC-IIT) is one of the National Research Council's (NRC) 20 research institutes and national programs. NRC-IIT is a multi-site organization, with facilities in Ottawa, ON; Fredericton, Moncton, NB; and Gatineau, QC. NRC-IIT conducts scientific research, develops technology, creates knowledge and supports innovation. The Institute is proud of its research excellence and innovative business practices and values its R&D collaborations in information and telecommunications technologies with business, universities and government agencies, in Canada and around the world.

The Knowledge Discovery Group is one of 7 research groups at IIT. It's mandate is to discover knowledge from data, the group applies data mining to several domains such as health, learning/training, energy among others. The group develops innovative knowledge discovery, management and reasoning solutions in these areas.

Your Challenge
The Knowledge Discovery Group of NRC-IIT is looking for a Research Officer who will engage in novel research in data mining and knowledge discovery. Research activities will include data warehousing, data preprocessing, data understanding, data analysis, mathematical modeling, post-processing and knowledge representation. It will also includes development of data mining and machine learning techniques, tools and methodologies targeting complex problems in data rich environments, such as life sciences, environment, energy. The successful candidate will join a team of researchers working on a number of topics focusing on innovative knowledge discovery applications and case studies. Screening Criteria
Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education
Ph.D. in Computer Science, Engineering, Systems Science, Biology/Biochemistry or another field relevant to the proposed research program.

Candidates who possess a Master's of Engineering with significant research and development experience relevant to the proposed research program may also be considered.

Experience

  • A proven research and development record in data mining or bioinformatics (1-3 sample research publication(s) must be included with the application).
  • Experience in developing and applying Data mining, Advanced Statistics, Artificial Intelligence based methods, simulations, operations research/optimization to health informatics, learning/training, energy or other domains, and decision support systems.
  • Significant demonstration of experience in transferring technology to industry.
  • Significant experience leading a research team.
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary teams.
Assessment Criteria
Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

Technical Competencies:
An in-depth knowledge in 3 of the following areas is required:

  • Data base design and data organization
  • Data mining algorithms
  • Visual data mining
  • Pattern recognition, analysis of multidimensional time series, and temporal databases
  • Artificial Intelligence based methods
  • Data mining methodologies and machine learning techniques
  • Knowledge representation and knowledge management
  • Ability to transfer technology to industry
Relocation
Relocation assistance will be determined in accordance with NRC's directives.
