Company: Microsoft
Location: Redmond, WA
Web: www.windowslive.com
Product: Windows Live - Safety Platform
Come and join the team of Applied Researchers responsible for keeping the Internet safe from Spam, phishing, malware, bots, and more. Our innovative technologies have shipped in Hotmail, IE, Outlook, Exchange, Windows Live, Windows and make hundreds of millions of people safer on the Internet every day - this is stuff that your friends will know about, stuff you can feel proud telling them about.
Our team is an applied research org and is somewhat unique in Microsoft. We are PhDs reporting into a product team. We've been here for five plus years now and we think we have the formula for blending longer term, higher risk, thought with short term product impact. We have massive, real-world data sets. We have deep, business critical problems to analyze. We have motivated adversaries. And we have a great collection of partner teams, across Microsoft and in Microsoft Research, anxious to collaborate with us and solve big problems.
The ideal candidate will have a PhD in or around one of these areas: Security, Internet Systems, Machine Learning, Data Management & Analysis, or Safety related HCI. They will also have solid empirical skills, including SQL, programming in one or more languages (e.g. C#, C++, Java), and solid experimental skills. They will have a desire to 'do what it takes' with about 30% of their time to interface with the product team and turn their ideas into impact. They will be willing to focus the majority of the remainder of their work in areas that may pay off in 3 years or sooner. ABD or demonstrated applied research experience are acceptable.
