Summary Job Description
The Director, Data Management will be responsible for the organization and execution of the corporate data processes and strategies. This includes all production data processes, research data repositories and participating in the company's data strategy planning. The position reports to the Chief Technology Officer and will supervise the group responsible for data receipt, transfers, updates, processing, cleaning, encrypting/decrypting, backup etc. for all data systems in the company. The position works closely alongside the IT group that manages the hardware and networking, the Software Engineering group that oversees the database architecture and the Analytics Services group that translates and analyzes certain client contributor data, as well as uses the research data systems.
The company's productions systems are 24x7 high performance scoring processes that require detailed maintenance and updating of the production data systems (Netapp SAN). The research data systems contain mirrored production data as well as extensive additional historical data for modeling and analysis. These data systems are geographically distributed, with the production systems in Atlanta and the research systems in a San Diego collocation facility. There are a variety of MySQL database and flat file structures across these systems, all in a unix environment.
This position works across lines of both production and research and is responsible for maintaining these two related systems that have different missions. The production systems must maintain a high throughput, always-up robust, stable performance. The research systems must be carefully designed and organized through the guidance of the company's scientists and modelers. It is desirable for this person to have experience working with scientists/modelers in a research/modeling environment to better understand issues around data quality and potential strategic use, including new product development.
This person will be accessing confidential data on a daily basis, therefore must maintain the highest level of adherence to ID Analytics, Inc. security policies and practices.
Principal Duties
The duties of the Director. Data Management include
- Defining and executing the corporate data processes and strategies, including
- Data receipt, tracking and transmission
- Data cleaning and quality control monitoring processes
- Production data updating
- Research data synchronization
- Research data organization and layout
- Processing client contributor data
- Data backup, recovery and archiving
- Provide technical leadership and vision around data systems and processes, keeping the appropriate balance of cost, stability, scalability, flexibility and robustness in the incorporation of new process and technology
- Instilling and maintaining high levels of security and integrity, working in close conjunction with the rest of the Information Security team
- Analyzing current data processes and workflows and provide solutions to improve performance, efficiency, robustness, and flexibility
- Providing management, leadership and technical advice to other data team members
- Maintaining a culture of the utmost importance of data: data processes, data integrity and cleanliness, strategic data use, creativity around assembling and organizing data (for both already existing and potential new data sources)
Qualifications
- 15 to 20 years experience working in a data intensive field, including extensive management and organization of data processes
- Knowledge and experience with modern data systems for very large, high performance, real time transaction processing data systems (e.g., MapReduce)
- Demonstrated strategic thinking around data organization and uses, including potential new data sources, possible new product development, new data architectures
- Ability to balance robust production needs with flexible research data needs
- Technical skills:
- Database experience (MySQL preferred)
- Experience with modern data structures
- Strong understanding of UNIX/Linux system architecture and commands
- Coding and/or scripting skills desired. Strong working knowledge of Java and experience with Perl, Awk, Python, and Bash desired.
- Strong knowledge of basic statistics
- Excellent written communication and oral communication skills
- Fundamental, intrinsic love of data, data quality, data processes and data strategy
