Job description
The Research Scientist will develop image processing algorithms to aid in the detection of explosives, weapons, and other contraband, contributing to the safety of air travel! The Research Scientist will work with a dynamic team of scientists, software and hardware engineers, and technicians to develop the next generation of detection algorithms and systems. Regular communication with both internal and external customers is likely.

The position reports to the Machine Vision Manager under the direction of the Engineering Manager.

The Machine Vision team is responsible for all facets of detection - for explosives, weapons, or any contraband. Our algorithms are fielded in airports around the nation and world. Team members are responsible for research and development, working directly with customers to find the best security solutions possible in a challenging real-world environment. If you like solving problems from start to finish, we will give you the domain expertise to help make the world a safer place.

  • Create algorithms to analyze images (such as X-ray and CT), searching for the presence of illicit items in airline baggage and air cargo. In particular, design, implement, and test algorithms for state-of-the-art CT-based automated explosives detection systems
  • Apply image processing and other advanced computing techniques to existing and new systems
  • Migrate solutions to related research projects
  • Develop software primarily in C++, with additional experimentation using Matlab and Python tools
  • Write and execute government research grants in the area of automated explosives detection
  • Direct research and development projects, shifting priorities as needed
  • Analyze systems and develop continuous improvement plan
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must have a MS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, or related field or BS with a minimum of 5 additional years experience in software development.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in software development
  • Minimum 2 years of C++ programming experience
DESIRED CHARACTERISTICS:
  • PhD preferred
  • Image processing expertise
  • Statistics, Data mining and Analysis skills and experience
  • History of successful research proposal development and execution
  • Windows and Linux development experience
  • Experience in generating and safeguarding intellectual property - particularly algorithms
  • Able to work both with a team and independently, with strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Highly organized and willing to accept challenge and responsibility
  • Flexibility to shift between tasks as needed
  • Creative thinker and problem solver
ELIGIBILILTY REQUIREMENTS:
  • Please submit your application for employment through the Morpho Detection website to be considered
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • As part of the selection process, you must be willing to take a drug test and submit to background investigations (including by the US government).
  • Must have unrestricted authorization to work in the United States.
  • Work in an office in Newark, CA
  • Willing to travel domestically and internationally for up to a week at a time (overall no more than 10% total).
  • Able to lift objects weighing up to 40 pounds
  • Eligible to apply for US Security Clearance (requires US Citizenship).
