We are looking for a strong applied research manager to lead the applied research team responsible for developing technologies to keep Microsoft customers safe from abuse on the Internet. The technologies we work on touch hundreds of millions of people every day. We have business-critical problems to analyze and impact. We have motivated adversaries. And we have a great collection of partner teams across Microsoft and Microsoft research, anxious to collaborate with us and solve big problems.
Our team's function is to collaborate with product teams and MSR researchers to create innovative technologies with the potential for high impact in a 1-3 year timeframe. We believe we've found the perfect blend between long term thought and real world impact. Over the past several years this has involved: analyzing massive data streams to understand how abusers work; using statistics and machine learning to build filters and reputation systems; using computer vision to find porn and spam; building and evaluating prototype systems; working with Internet scale systems; building mathematical and economic models of abuse; and more. We've been doing this for over five years now. We have massive, real-world data sets.
The ideal candidate will have: excellent technical and people skills; the ability to think long term and deal with high levels ambiguity; demonstrated ability at turning insight into impact in Microsoft. We are looking for someone who can scale to provide leadership in areas as diverse as: Spam, phishing, malware, Abuse and Fraud, Internet Systems, Machine Learning (including machine vision), Data Mining & Statistics, Human computer interaction around safety, and more.
