The Online Services Division vision is to enable people everywhere to gain knowledge and creativity from the web by computationally understanding user intent and matching that with published content, advertising offerings, and software services. By intent, we mean computationally understanding what the user is trying to accomplish. Bing (and Relevance team in particular) is at the heart of this.

In Relevance, we are responsible for crawling and indexing the entire Internet (Index Generation), altering queries and ranking documents relative to queries (Query Alterations and Core Ranking), measuring the overall relevance and driving new features (Relevance Measurement). We work daily with hundreds of terabytes of data, billions of web pages, and thousands of machines. And with over a billion queries per month today, this scale is growing exponentially. For thousands of queries per second our job is to match the query against billions of documents and produce the best ordering possible. The first step in delivering best results is understanding the user intent and enhancing the query as part of query alteration. We mine terabytes of logs and use several sources on the internet to come up with the best algorithms to generate alternate words to the user initial query. The Search engine depends on this critical information to better answer the customer query.

Index Generation team is the backbone that powers Bing Relevance. Our charter is nothing short of building the biggest, freshest, cleanest and richest web index in the industry. Sophisticated crawling techniques, intelligent static ranking algorithms, complex real-time (fresh/ news) search results capability, advanced document parsing, understanding and content extraction as well as high accuracy document classification tied to spam/ junk/ malware/adult detection are just some of the challenging and exciting projects that await you here. Achieving this requires a wide assortment of technologies and methodologies, both time tested as well as cutting edge avant-garde, including machine learning, information retrieval, data mining, natural language processing and so much more. Generating the right index for a search engine is an extremely challenging problem that requires the most talented and passionate engineers Microsoft has to offer.

As a Senior Lead SDET on the Relevance team you will manage and lead a team of highly skilled engineers, define strategies for measuring product quality, testing techniques and manage team staffing. You will be involved with research & development, data mining, neural network experimentation and innovative testing techniques. The results of your work and engineering excellence, combined with your focus on quality and customer satisfaction will enable us to get closer to our vision and impacting the daily lives of millions of delighted customers.

A successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

• Strong design, coding and debugging skills in C++/C#;
• 3+ years experience managing and leading FTE SDETs;
• Strong project management experience, spanning multiple projects;
• Demonstrated experience delivering results through collaboration across disciplines, feature teams, and partners;
• Demonstrated experience shipping products at Microsoft (Services a big plus but not required);
• Exceptional test aptitude, customer focus and expertise in formal and informal testing techniques as well as quality measurement.
• Machine learning, information retrieval techniques, data mining & statistical analysis experience are a plus.
