Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories (MERL) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Member of Research Staff in the Data Analytics Group. The successful candidate will be expected to perform original research on topics related to decision analytics and optimization of large industrial systems and processes, both deterministic and stochastic. Further qualifications are detailed below.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct research and development in the area of optimization and decision making in complex systems. Devise new research ideas and pursue them all the way to realization in prototypes. Assist in preparing patent applications. Publication in major conferences and journals is encouraged.
- Transfer technology to business units. Travel to Mitsubishi Electric locations in Japan and elsewhere will be necessary.
Qualifications:
- A Ph.D. degree in Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field. Applicants without a PhD degree will not be considered for the position. For applicants without industrial work experience, dissertation topic should be related to modeling and optimization of large systems.
- Strong background in decision theory, optimization, probability theory, statistics, and stochastic processes.
- Practical experience in one or more of the following: combinatorial optimization, linear/quadratic/general non-linear optimization, sequential decision processes, stochastic optimization.
- Good programming skills in Matlab and C/C++ or Java, and experience in using them for solving optimization problems. Experience with industrial-grade optimization software such as CPLEX, IPOPT, GUROBI, etc. would be a plus.
- Experience in one or more of the following areas desired: predictive analytics, system identification, reinforcement learning, graph theory, optimal control theory, discrete algorithms.
- Good verbal and written communication skills are a must. Good inter-personal skills are essential.
- Applicant must be quick to adapt to project needs, and able to work on multiple projects.
