Senior Applied Research Manager, Yield Optimization, Ads by Amazon
The Product Ads team is looking for an online advertising expert to lead our Performance and Optimization team that will contribute research, analytics and engineering expertise for the development of a successful online advertising program. The role involves: recruiting and leading a team of researchers, statisticians and engineers; building next generation algorithms and models for ad auctions and ad networks; working with our business and engineering teams to devise and build innovative monetization solutions for varied online advertising scenarios; and working with large volumes of data to extract insight using statistics, data mining, yield optimization and machine learning techniques.

Our principal challenge is to drive monetization by selecting the most relevant ads to show to a particular customer on a particular page. We have a variety of data available to help us make targeting decisions, including customer behavior, historical ad performance, and page context. However, the volume of data and the combinatorial effect of multiple dimensions of data pose a challenge for predicting ad performance. Ads need to be delivered in tens of milliseconds, compounding the problem further. We are looking for a technical leader that can drive innovative approaches to these problems.

Key responsibilities:

  • Recruiting and leading a team of engineers and researchers responsible for performance, analytics and optimization
  • Establishing the charter, goals, metrics, processes and relationships for this team
  • Working closely with leaders from the business and engineering sides as well as peer teams to maximize impact on business performance and evolution
  • Delivering end-to-end business analytics to produce insights and data-driven decision-making from large-scale data
  • Proactive monitoring and analysis of our complex systems to understand, diagnose and continuously improve business and operation parameters
  • Strategic analysis, modeling and projection for new monetization strategies, products and business directions
  • Work with user interaction data to understand and measure user intent, utility to users, and user satisfaction
  • Experiment design and rigorous statistical analysis to answer business questions and evaluate products
Basic Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in software development and 2+ years managing people
  • 2+ years of industrial work experience in information retrieval, data mining, or online advertising
  • Bachelor's degree Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related technical discipline
  • Domain knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas:
  • Information retrieval, web search, relevance
  • Statistics, machine learning, data mining
  • Algorithms , optimization, auction theory
  • Theory and practice of online advertising
  • Experience with large data sets, experiment design and analysis
Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in a relevant field of Computer Science or related discipline
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills, ability to convey rigorous mathematical concepts and considerations to non-experts
  • The ability to distill problem definitions, models, constraints from informal business requirements; and to deal with ambiguity and competing objectives
  • The ability to prioritize well, communicate clearly, and consistently deliver results
