Research/Machine Learning Engineer

Description: Fwix is organizing the web by location. We are developing geotagging technology to automatically identify physical locations referenced in online content. Is your blog talking about Starbucks? Which one? The one in Paris, TX or Paris, France? Who else is talking about THAT Paris? Oh, and Joe Montana - not a place. Now mix in the physical world - businesses, structures, neighborhoods, polygons, latitude, longitude...

This is a very hard, and very fun problem to solve!

We are looking for people who can apply rigourous methods to pull apart a problem, organize and identify issues, and come up with creative solutions to solve them. Our problems range from NLP issues (entity extraction, summarization, search, sorting) to being solved with machine learning (training data, models, local features, genetic algorithms). You'll be given a datastore of hundreds of millions of pieces of content to work with, and you'll be tasked at using your ingenuity to create ways to structure unstructured data and pull out relevant and related information to our 60 million+ place database - and then bring it to life for Fwix's and our partners' millions of users.

The ideal candidate has:

• solid understanding and demonstrability of algorithms and datastructures
• background in NLP or machine learning techniques
• PhD in NLP or machine learning, or 4+ years experience in a related area
• search background a plus
• experience in one of Python/Java/C/C++
• large scale systems background a plus
• database experience a plus (MySQL, Cassandra)
• experience with functional/unit testing a plus
• top notch analytical skills
• independent thinker
• previous startup experience a plus
