we are developing a system to find, organize and analyze online content about physical places by geotagging the web.

Location, location, location!
At Fwix, we are developing a system to find, organize and analyze online content about physical places.
We geotag the web - we are working to automatically identify physical locations referenced in online content.
Our solution utilizesour geotagging to create a location graph powering our analytics engine
allowing us to create products that offer views into everything from location
aware streams of content to local business insights.
We have a constantly growing system that needs to be real time and scalable, while
slicing and dicing data in ad-hoc ways. You'll help us figure out how to do that.
Our system is python, with some java and C/C++ thrown in. We use MySQL, gearman,
membase, memcache, mongodb, sphinx, elastic search - we've used redis, rethinkdb,
cassandra, we are thinking about using rabbitmq and hadoop. And we are building a data mart of information across the 50 million points of interest in our database.
Our large data and cloud system form the center of our geotagging technology -
determining the physical locations in or referenced by a piece of content - and
the relational graph behind our ever growing stream of data.
We are looking for someone who can apply rigourous methods to pull apart
a problem, organize and identify issues, measure results, and come up with
creative solutions to solve them. You will discover new ways to process our data,
and derive insights that will drive our products. Above all you will have a passion for
applying your ideas and techniques into actual products, and you'll want to
be in the trenches developing and coding along side your team.
Our problems range from NLP issues (entity extraction, summarization,
search, sorting) to being solved with machine learning (training data, models,
local features, genetic algorithms). You'll be given a datastore of hundreds of
millions of pieces of content to work with, and you'll be tasked at using your ingenuity to
create ways to structure unstructured data and pull out relevant and
related information to our 50 million+ place database -
and then bring it to life in Fwix's platform.
Fwix is a well funded startup, and we provide benefits, competitive salaries and equity. We are
located in downtown San Francisco in SOMA, always have 2 beers on tap in our office, free ping pong :),
and a group of extremely smart and talented engineers. If you are looking for you next big challenge, contact us!
