Researcher

1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East is the largest, fastest growing and most progressive union in the United States representing over 300,000 hospital, nursing home, homecare and human service workers. The members of 1199 SEIU are driven by a mission to achieve affordable, quality healthcare for all. We are currently looking for a Researcher based out of New York City or Boston.

The Researcher will work with the research staff in maintaining and analyzing large databases of health care information. The job requires an advanced understanding of database structures and programming ability. Also, experience working with health care data is a plus.

Duties include:

• Upload, restructure, verify and manage large health care datasets from a variety of sources with strict data use policies,
• Work independently and with other researchers to create complicated queries on health care data that replicate academic and industry methodologies, model impacts of policy or regulatory changes, uncover new trends and anomalies or provide quick responses to information needs for union campaigns,
• Transfer data to other useable formats such as Excel, and
• Delivering written and oral reports to both technical and lay audiences.

Job Qualifications:

• Bachelors or Masters degree,
• Commitment to improving the lives of working families,
• Minimum three years experience with data retrieval, manipulation and analytical software (SQL required, SPSS, SAS, R, GIS a plus)
• The ability to quickly learn new skills and adapt to changing campaign requirements,
• Excellent critical thinking, writing, and quantitative skills,
• Advanced knowledge of SQL and database management,
• Programming experience required, data automation and web-scraping a plus,
• Experience with healthcare data preferred, and
• Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work independently.
