Sr Data Scientist

About the Job
This position is part of a Big Data Platform team at PayPal - focused on Risk Management. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a core team of machine learning engineers and scientist; an opportunity to build solutions for managing and mining big data. We work very closely with the statisticians and analysts to apply advance analytics techniques to solve fraud detection business problems.

Primary Job Responsibilities

• Investigate various technologies and tools used to manage and mine large data (data in the Petabytes size )
• Apply analytics on large data sets to design/prototype data mining algorithms that add intelligence to raw data.
• Utilize cutting edge distributed computing technologies to manipulate large data sets, apply data transformations and extract pertinent information.
• Provide thought leadership to the team, evangelize the technology usage and drive adoption and final delivery of these technologies.
• Work closely with users (business analysts and statisticians) as well as engineers to ensure production deployment of Big data platform components.

• Experienced engineer/scientist with a broad understanding of technology stacks used in data mining.
• Experience with SQL and exposure to analytical processing.
• Experience with HADOOP, Map/Reduce and PIG.
• Strong hands-on experience with a programming language like Java and/ or scripting language (Perl / Python/ Shell scripts etc.)
• The ideal candidate is someone with strong software engineering skills and a basic understanding of statistical modeling.
