Salary: The pay is $135-220k with a 15% target bonus.

POSITION OBJECTIVE
The Data Science Manager will be responsible for providing strategic direction and expertise to understand key business questions that can be addressed using data. This position will be responsible for leading, designing, developing and fielding data driven solutions that have a direct impact to the organization. The manager will work closely with leaders across the company and externally to build a variety of models to make critical business decisions. This position will connect with stakeholders across organizations to identify opportunities to extract value from datasets to produce innovative solutions and solve focused analytical problems.

PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES AND MAJOR ACTIVITIES


Research & Model Development
  • Oversee the creation of innovative vision and strategies, along with business application and modeling framework for new datasets, and discovers insights and relationships from large/complex datasets through investigative research using advanced mathematical and/or statistical techniques.
  • Leads the build of complex programs for running quantitative tests on data and for understanding correlation of various attributes.
  • Oversees the exploration of data using a variety of advanced techniques to proactively identify relationships, create insights and answer business questions or guide future model development.
  • Oversees the build of hypotheses and identification of research attributes to determine the best approach to address business issues.

 
Analytics Strategy
  • Provide senior level support in the area of strategic analytics, to identify business opportunities, solve complex problems and optimize business performance.
  • Provide insight to senior management to support strategic decision-making, preparing and delivering insights and recommendations based on analyses.
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and application of state-of-the art scientific solutions for addressing business questions.
  • Monitors industry and competitor trends to determine potential impact to predictive models and incorporates findings to provide insight as part of model development and enhancement.
  • Networks with and contributes thought leadership to the broader external analytics community. Builds awareness of leading techniques, tools and data sources.
  • Identify data partners, both internal and external, to gather the data to build best in class data solutions.
  • Interact with company senior leadership as well as Business Development and Strategic Data & Analytics (SD&A) leadership to assist in the development of the strategic direction of data science.

 
Analytics Leadership
  • Lead the definition of processes and procedures to enable the team to execute efficiently.
  • Facilitate problem-solving sessions with Data Sciences team and leaders across engaged organizations.
  • Manage work flow for data sciences and provide technical leadership to the team.
  • Leads discussions with company senior leadership to inform on industry trends and emerging research topics. Serves as internal expert for new areas of analytics exploration.
  • Participate in project teams and act in a leadership role as a trusted primary business and scientific partner with a keen focus on data driven decisions.

 
Management/Leadership for Department or Unit
  • Manages direct reports, systems, and projects to achieve department/unit goals in accordance with Company policies and practices.
  • Prepares and analyzes department/unit plans and reports.
  • Provides leadership by exhibiting influence and expertise, thus affecting the results of the operating area.
  • Creates an effective work environment by developing a common vision, setting clear objectives, expecting teamwork, recognizing outstanding performance, and maintaining open communications.
  • Develops staff through coaching, providing performance feedback, providing effective performance assessments, and establishing performance & development plans.

EDUCATION/LICENSES/DESIGNATIONS
Master's Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Computer Sciences or Engineering, or related field.

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIREMENT
  • Demonstrated experience using analytically-oriented languages such as Python or R.
  • Demonstrated experience communicating complex findings in a clear and concise manor to senior management.
  • Demonstrated experience in machine learning, predictive modeling, or statistics / data mining using large amounts of structured, semi structured, and unstructured data.
  • Demonstrated experience formulating, approaching, and solving complex analytical problems using a quantitative, scientific approach.
  • Demonstrated experience working with large, complex datasets using big data technologies and script language such as Python, Java, or C/C++.
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of advanced statistical, machine learning and/or data mining techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing complex projects and effectively leading interdisciplinary teams to accomplish project goals.
  • Solid knowledge and understanding of insurance industry products and services.
  • Demonstrated experience growing and managing a data sciences team.
  • Demonstrated experience managing in an Agile environment.
