Summary

Celgene has established a Big Data capability that provides actionable insights and informs decisions throughout the product life cycle and in support of Celgene’s bold pursuit to improve patient lives.

Celgene’s modern Big Data Platform is the foundation for the Capability and integrates Cloudera Hadoop distribution with ETL/ELT and advance analytics tools.

The Big Data Platform Engineer is responsible for the platform stability, performance, enablement of new capabilities, multi-tenant management, and making sure physical implementation matches solution architecture and fulfills solution requirements.

The role enables other roles that are responsible for building and supporting solutions on the platform. It provides subject matter expertise on Big Data techniques and tools and contributes to the Big Data Reference Architecture. It also assists users with piloting advanced platform capabilities and with conducting innovation POCs.

The role will work closely with the Big Data Solution Architect, the Big Data DevOps Lead and the Platform Infrastructure Engineer.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Perform configuration, patching, upgrades of the Cloudera environments and associated tools
  • Own and resolve any opportunities or issues related to the operations of the platform across multiple tenants.
  • Create detailed designs and POCs to enable new workloads and technical capabilities on the Platform.  Work with the platform and infrastructure engineers to implement these capabilities in production.
  • Create full visibility into the health and utilization of the platform through use of real-time dashboards, alerts and other mechanisms.
  • Manage workloads and enable workload optimization including managing resource allocation and scheduling across multiple tenants to fulfill SLAs.
  • Provide Level-3 support and coordinate support from relevant vendors
  • Coordinate activities with Cloud Infrastructure and other enabling IT teams
  • Ensure platform SLAs are met
  • Reports KPI and Metrics
  • Participate in planning activities
  • Participate in Data Science CoP and perform activities to increase platform skills

Scope:

  • Span of Control –  Global, cross functional, Big Data Analytics platform
  • Direct Reports –  None
  • Indirect Reports – will direct the work of implementation partners and a matrix group within IT of approximately 5-10
  • Budgetary Responsibility –  None
  • Interacts w/ -  IT Directors, IKU Solution Partner, DevOps Lead, Platform Infrastructure Engineer, Data Scientists, Big Data Developers, External Vendors

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, system analysis or a related study, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 3-5 years hands-on experience with Big Data technologies e.g. Hadoop, Spark, Hive. Robust experience with Cloudera is a plus.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in Cloud environments, preferably AWS
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in areas such as teamwork, influence, facilitation and negotiation
  • Problem Solver

Skills/Knowledge Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, system analysis or a related study, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 3-5 years working in a Big Data service delivery (or equivalent) roles focusing on the following disciplines:
    • Platform/IT engineering and/or deployment
    • Solution architecture
    • Big Data Analytics / Business Intelligence / Data Warehousing
  • Minimum of 5-10 years of combined hands-on experience with the following techniques and tools:
    • Big Data (Hadoop ecosystems/distributions e.g. Cloudera/HortonWorks/EMR)
    • NoSQL and Graph databases
    • Data integration (ETL/ELT)
    • Metadata Management
    • Solid security expertise, in particular with Kerberos and Active Directory
    • Hands on experience with managing solutions deployed in the Cloud, preferably on AWS
  • Cloudera Engineer Certification is a plus
  • Experience working in a Global company and an on-shore/off-shore operating model 
  • Experience working in a DevOps model is a plus
  • Understanding of IT Processes and Frameworks such as ITIL and SDLC
  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies
