Research Engineer / Applied Scientist

About the Job
This position is part of newly formed Applied R&D team at PayPal - focused on Risk Detection. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a core team of machine learning engineers and scientists, and build the next generation data transformation / machine learning solutions. We are a small team with an ambitious and exciting plan. We work very closely with the statisticians, analysts and engineers to apply advance machine learning techniques to solve fraud detection business problems.

Primary Job Responsibilities

• Design and develop the data transformations needed for producing machine learning data sets, processing terabytes of data.
• Develop creative new features that track the online behavior of fraudsters.
• Use those features, data transforms and algorithms to build, train and rollout machine learning solutions.
• Build and enhance various software components for very large scale data processing.
• Learn Risk Detection business problems and design creative solutions to enable business managers and analysts to solve those.

• Experienced engineer / scientist with strong programming skills in Java or C / C++.
• Machine learning / information retrieval / large data mining exposure.
• Familiarity with scalable data processing techniques such as Hadoop -MapReduce.
• Some experience processing large datasets.
• Good understanding of data structures and data processing algorithms.
• Understanding of non-linear modeling techniques such as Neural networks, SVM, boosted trees etc.

• BS / MS in computer science or related field and 5+ years of related programming experience or Masters with 4+ years or PhD 1+ years of hands on programming experience.
• Demonstrated ability to independently design / develop and test software applications.
