Date: Fri, 14 Apr 2000 15:25:19 +0200
The Netherlands Study Centre for Technology Trends is organising a foresight
study on data mining.
The study aims to generate visions on the future of data mining and its
impact on society. We are looking to augment the project with views from
international experts. What we would like to ask you is to give a vision of
the future in writing in your specific area of interest.

Foresight study on data mining by the Netherlands Study Centre for
Technology Trends (STT).

STT is an independent non profit organisation, partly funded by by
corporate, partly by government sponsors.
http://www.stt.nl/index_intl.htm

The study aims to generate visions on the future of data mining and its
impact on society. These visions are meant to be realistic and will be
enriched with recommendations for enhancing positive and minimizing negative
impact.
The visions will be edited and published in a book for our specific target
'customers': policy makers in corporate and government circles. The language
will be English.

The project is organised with help of a steering committee and several
workgroups, that focus on different area's. Already around 50 data mining
experts from the Netherlands have joined the workgroups.

The visions will be generated by experts in these workgroups divided in the
following area's:
1. Data mining in science
2. Data mining in corporate and government environments
3. Data mining for the individual citizen

In the Netherlands, there will be three multidisciplinary workgroups that
meet 5 or 6 times. The workgroup members will give a vision of the future on
their specific area of expertise.

We are looking to augment the project with views from international experts.
For this purpose we have arranged an online workspace where all project
participants can meet. This workspace offers features like meeting reports,
a file-area, threaded discussion list, polls etc. We will be actively
setting up discussions and polls to support the project goals. Through the
file area, preliminary visions can be co-authored, completed or commented.
Your expertise would be greatly appreciated.
Why join the project?
	-	This is a chance to help shape the future. If you have ideas
on where and how data mining could, should (and maybe should not) be used
this could help you bring them to the outside world.
	-	Share views with many other experts on the future of data
mining, all of which have joined the project because they believe in its
goals

Also, project participants (authors) will have free entrance at the final
symposium and will receive a free copy of the book. The book and all
workgroup communication will be in English.

How to participate?
As an expert in the field of data mining, you will have your specific area
of interest. What we would like to ask you is to give a vision of the future
in writing about this specific area of interest. If you would like to
contribute, please give us an indication of your subject, and background.
