Subject: Postdoc positions in data mining for genetics at U. of Helsinki, Finland

Applications are invited for postdoc positions in a research project developing data mining methods for human genetics at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Helsinki. The project concentrates on algorithms for gene mapping, haplotyping, and genetic data analysis.

Applicants should have a PhD or equivalent in computer science, statistics, or related area. Experience in algorithms, theory of computation, machine learning, or data mining and its applications is a plus. More information can be obtained from Prof. Hannu Toivonen (Hannu.Toivonen@cs.helsinki.fi) or Prof. Heikki Mannila (Heikki.Mannila@cs.helsinki.fi). Applications should contain cv, a list of publications, a statement of research interests, and the names and addresses of three references. Please send the application to Hannu Toivonen at the above address by March 29, 2002.

The positions are located in the data mining research group at the Department of Computer Science at University of Helsinki. The research group works on theoretical aspects of data mining as well as on applications of data mining in a variety of areas, including computational biology and telecommunications. The group has excellent contacts with both industry and various application groups (in, e.g., medical genetics, functional genomics, and ecology). For more information on the group, see http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/research/fdk.

The group is also part of the basic research unit of the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology (HIIT), a joint research institute of the two leading research universities in Helsinki, the University of Helsinki and the Helsinki University of Technology. The Basic Research Unit of HIIT is a recently established part of HIIT concentrating on long term research in selected areas of information technology. The unit is located at the Computer Science Department, University of Helsinki, Finland, but parts operate also in the Laboratory of Computer and Information Science, Helsinki University of Technology, Finland. The unit works in close cooperation with the departments of computer science (see http://www.cs.helsinki.fi and http://www.cis.hut.fi) of both universities. The unit provides a stimulating research environment, with excellent facilities and connections to many application groups in sciences and in industry.
