We frequently see references for various data mining programs that can successfully predict stock market indices such as S&P 500 on historical data, but it is hard to judge if that theoretical success will translate to future success in the real world, especially in a volatile stock market like we have seen recently.

Of course, this poll greatly oversimplifies the many dimensions of the stock market predictions, but it may still be instructive.
