Subject: Scanning the web for hot topics automatically?

I have a project to look at data mining, specifically to use some form of automation tools to monitor information sources (within the environmental domain) and identify what are key 'hot topics' and concepts that need further investigation. This will form the basis of our 'horizon scanning' activities. For example, we have been interested in things like 'Word Bursts' which might be useful for monitoring blogs and other sites. There are also sites like http://www.daypop.com which have implemented word burst algorithms but without the functionality to narrow the topic domain.

I have found no existing product that can achieve this function and will be experimenting with Copernic Agent Pro as a beginning for the collection, monitoring and concept extraction side of the process, as well as giving our information workers extra tools to help them search.

Do you know of anyone or any products that could be used for this process?
