Subject: Java Data Mining (JSR-73) Specification approved

The Java Community Process (JCP) Executive Committee voted to accept Java Specification Request (JSR) 73: Java Data Mining (JDM). The proposed final draft also includes a Web Services interface for JDM with XML Schema and WSDL. See http://www.jcp.org/jsr/detail/73.jsp to access the final documents to be posted by July 29, 2004.

JSR-247, to begin JDM 2.0, has also been approved by the JCP Executive Committee. Some of the features being considered for JDM 2.0 include: sequential patterns, time series, transformations, ensemble models, apply for association, mining unstructured data such as text and images, model comparison, feature extraction, multi-target models, and extending JDM web services for these and other features. The expert group is now forming. Those interested in joining the expert group may submit a nomination form at http://www.jcp.org/en/jsr/detail?id=247.

Java Data Mining provides a framework for performing common data mining operations, while facilitating the introduction of new or non-standard mining algorithms. By separating algorithm details from function level specification, JDM strives to make data mining accessible to mining experts and novices. JDM currently focuses on mining functions including classification, regression, clustering, association, and attribute importance (a.k.a. feature selection).

To facilitate public exchange of ideas on JDM, a new project on java.net has been created: "datamining" at https://datamining.dev.java.net/, providing a discussion forum, announcements, and document sharing among Java Data Mining users.

See http://www.jcp.org/introduction/overview/index.en.jsp for an introduction to the Java Community Process and becoming a member.
