Subject: INFORMS News on Data Mining

Data mining has grown over the past decade as a major interface between Operations Research and Computer Science, particularly the historical connections OR has had with statistics and artificial intelligence.

As Editor of ICS News, the INFORMS Computing Science Society newsletter, I invite you to read our Fall issue, to be available at http://computing.society.informs.org/newsletter.php. This will be posted in November, after the Seattle INFORMS meeting.

Among the articles in the forthcoming issue is one on data mining by Andrew Kusiak, University of Iowa. If you browse our earlier issues, you will see some news and technical articles pertaining to the many interfaces between Operations Research and Computer Science. If you were not active in the 1970s (e.g., not yet born), you might have a look at our history on our archive page. You can note how intertwined the OR/CS interface is, going back to the 1950s with the emergence of sparse matrix techniques, algorithm testing, simulation, and much more.
