Subject: Open PhD Positions in "Temporal Data Mining" at U. of Konstanz, Germany

The Department of Computer and Information Science at the University of Konstanz, the youngest of the nine German Excellence Universities, has various open PhD student positions in an interdisciplinary research team focussing on temporal data mining.

The research agenda of this team aims to develop tools for analyzing and visually exploring temporal sequences, as found for example in human-computer interaction patterns, biological sequences, and software development traces. The goal will be to develop new methods for the automatic or semi-automatic identification of complex patterns in temporal data, which can be used to improve interaction systems, understand biological systems or detect faults in complex software systems. The concrete applications of the individual PhD projects can be oriented in accordance with the applicants thematic interest; opportunities for collaborations with other research groups within the department or with other departments at the University of Konstanz are manifold.

The research embraces methods of data mining and machine learning, information visualization as well as human factors aspects. Applicants should bring sufficient knowledge of computer languages and programming and show strong analytic interest. Self-motivation and excellent language skills in English are indispensable. The work will be carried out within the data analysis platform KNIME (www.knime.org/).

There are PhD student positions available as part of the research group of Prof. M. Berthold (www.inf.uni-konstanz.de/bioml/) or the department's DFG sponsored PhD Research Training Group (www.inf.uni-konstanz.de/typo3/Graduiertenkolleg.255.0.html). In case of strong interest in biological applications a membership in the newly founded Graduate School "Chemical Biology" is also possible, which is funded by the German Excellence Initiative (www.chembiol.uni-konstanz.de/).

If you are interested in one of these positions, please send your CV and a short summary of your interests and how they relate to this project (~1 page) to Michael.Berthold@uni-konstanz.de. Please refrain from sending spam-like mass-applications. The summary part of your application will be used for pre-screening incoming applications and must contain more than just a list of buzz words.
