HARTFORD VENTURES:

Hartford Ventures is an innovation arm of the Property & Casualty division of The Hartford fostering innovation both internal and external to the company. The team pilots innovative products, services and operational improvements; provides venture capital to start-up companies; and forms strategic partnerships in areas such as new insurance distribution and underwriting models, information technology, and non-insurance products and services that address our customers’ needs.  In addition, the team identifies emerging opportunities in the insurance and related industries and works with the relevant internal business segments to position these opportunities within the Company’s long-term strategic agenda.
Hartford Ventures is part of the Strategic Business Development group, which also includes M&A, Strategic Initiatives, Six Sigma and an insurance technology and solutions subsidiary.

THE POSITION:

The Directors of Innovation will be part of a multi-disciplined team that both works with the Business Segments and independently pursues opportunities to drive the long-term innovation agenda of The Hartford’s P&C division.  This project execution-oriented team owns a portfolio of activities including developing a pipeline of projects, launching new business initiatives, and executing exploration, market testing and pilot projects that expand the market presence or improve the executional capability of the Company. 

The two Directors will be responsible for maintaining a close relationship with selected business segments and functions in order to cultivate segment-specific project pipelines.  In addition, the Directors will play a critical business modeling role in terms of understanding the business model of each of their segments and being creative in identifying ways to support or extend these business models.  This position reports to the Assistant Vice President of Innovation.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MBA from a leading Business School
  • 3-5 years of strategy consulting experience with a recognized strategy consulting firm
  • 3-5 years experience in a business development or product marketing role or within an innovation-oriented corporate role
  • Previous experience starting a new entity, e.g. a company, business segment, market, or product
  • High level of creativity combined with structured strategic thinking for identifying and analyzing complex business issues
  • Experience analyzing and creating new business models
  • Ability to transform ideas into action in demanding environments
  • Demonstrated experience as a thought leader
  • Ability to develop, articulate, present, and promote a vision
  • Ability to manage conflict, negotiate and create compelling business arguments
  • Ability to influence diverse teams and build strong business relationships both internal and external to the Company
  • Strong Project Management Skills
  • Strong Leadership Skills
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills
  • Self-starter, comfortable working without structure or creating structure
  • Experience working with Senior Executives
  • Knowledge of Financial Services and Insurance Industry preferred, but not required
  • Strong functional expertise in Strategy, Business Development, or Product Marketing
