FeaturesFrom: Gregory Piatetsky-ShapiroDate: 13 Apr 2009 Subject: SIGKDD 2009 Election - time for change SIGKDD is the premiere association for advancing research and applications in the knowledge discovery and data mining field. SIGKDD organizes the annual KDD conference (next one - KDD-09 - is in Paris, Jun 28 - Jul 1, 2009), publishes SIGKDD Explorations, co-sponsors additional conferences such as WSDM, and does other things to promote research and education in knowledge discovery and data mining. SIGKDD is guided by elected executive committee made of chair, treasurer, 6 directors, and from 2009 also a past chair - all volunteer positions, with no salary. I was actively involved in KDD since 1989, when I organized the first KDD workshop. I organized two more KDD workshops and chaired the KDD Steering Committee until the creation of SIGKDD in 1998. For the last 4 years I served as SIGKDD chair. It was at times enjoyable and fun. At other times - very frustrating, demanding, and time consuming. At all times it was rewarding to serve the data mining community. I believe in change and renewal and the time has come to pass the torch (or rather data mining "shovel" ?) into new hands. Although I am not running for re-election, I will continue to be part of the executive committee as the past chair until the next election. I am very pleased to present the excellent slate of candidates who are running for SIGKDD positions. Usually only 10% or so vote in SIG elections, but let's make this election have the highest turnout ever. Please read the candidates election platforms bios and Vote on www.kdnuggets.com to show your support for the candidates, and if you are a SIGKDD member, cast your ballot at ACM site.
