Subject: Geoff Webb for SIGKDD Director

Geoff Webb I will work to retain the SIGKDD Conference's position as the premier conference in the field.

Data Mining is an exciting field in which to work because it is one where theoretical and experimental computer science have direct payoff in high-value applications. I bridge all of theory, experimental research and applications, and will ensure that SIGKDD maintains the vital nexus between all three. This nexus is especially important for the conference, being one of the keys to the conference's continuing eminence in the field.

As an Australian, I will also bring an international perspective to the Executive's deliberations.

Biography
Geoff Webb holds a research chair in Australia's largest Faculty of Information Technology at Australia's largest university, Monash. He heads the Monash Centre for Research in Intelligent Systems. His primary research areas are machine learning, data mining, and user modelling.

His commercial data mining software, Magnum Opus, incorporates many techniques from his association discovery research. Many of his learning algorithms are included in the widely-used Weka machine learning workbench. He is editor-in-chief of the highest impact data mining journal, Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery, co-editor of the Encyclopedia of Machine Learning (to be published by Springer), a member of the advisory board of Statistical Analysis and Data Mining and a member of the editorial boards of Machine Learning and ACM Transactions on Knowledge Discovery in Data.
