My name is Tom. I am a postgraduate student of BIS (Business Information Systems) in UCC (University College Cork) Ireland. I am currently undertaking a 1 year (Sept.07-Oct.08) full-time Masters by Research (M.Sc.) in BIS. My research supervisors are Dr. David Sammon and Mr. Simon Woodworth. My research interests are in the area of Business Intelligence (BI) using Data Mining tools. Because of my background, I would be interested in the technical aspects of data mining tools and techniques used to provide valued information for organisational decision support. For example, the analysis of ‘customer churn’ in the telecom service or customer consumption behaviours in the financial sector.
PROFILE:
1. Strong IT background.
I have an M.Sc. in Computer Science from UCC. I majored in software development for computer networks. Before I started this Masters degree, I worked as an IT engineer for 4 years in Beijing, China. Most of the projects which I worked on involved J2EE and database development.
My technical skills include:
Programming Languages: Java (J2SE, J2EE), SQL, C#, C++, JavaScript, ASP, CSS, XML, HTML
Software Engineering: Familiar with Software Development Life Cycle and Software Quality Assurance.
Application Server: Weblogic, Tomcat, IIS
Operating Systems: Linux, UNIX
Database Systems: Oracle9i, SQL Server2000, MySQL5.0
2. Data mining project experience.
For my Masters degree in Computer Science I completed a data mining analysis project. The Analysis of Privacy Issues project on AOL Search Data involved extracting over 650,000 AOL users’ profiles from the known AOL (America On-Line) released website search data for 2006. From the user search profiles, we can extrapolate the users' usual behaviors and interests. From a long-term perspective, I believe that the technology can be used in the areas of commercial marketing, market survey, market forecast. The data mining application was developed using MySQL5.0 and J2EE.
3. Well developed problem solving skills, creative and determined.
EDUCATION:
2006 - 2007: University College Cork, Ireland
MSc in Applied Science (Software Development for Computer Networks)
Final Result: 2H1.
Project:
Title: Analysis of Privacy Issues in AOL Search Data.
Finial result: 67%.
1998 – 2002: Xi’an Institute of Technology, China
BEng, Computer Science and Technology
Final result: 1H.
Project:
Title: The Emulation of Communicative Networks
Finial result: 75%.
WORK EXPERIENCE:
Mar. 2005 - June 2006 Founder Group, Beijing, China
Software Developer
Projects include:
1. Rebuilt the database system of E-statistic System.
The main function of the project is to collect and analyze statistics of the sale of E-books. E-statistic system is one of the most important systems of Founder Group. Due to the rapid increase of the data and the previous defect design of the database, the system speed required an up-grade. My project was to propose a solution plan and rebuild the database structure using SQL server 2000
2. Developed the administrating management module of NetCT_OSS by J2EE.
Project included programming design (Oracle 9i, J2EE) of the administrating management module of Pricing Management. The purpose of this module is to manage both the general users and administrators. Some of its key functions were addition, deletion, modification and search. The whole system adopts Struts frame based on MVC. It improves the expansibility of programs, and is easily maintained.
3. Developed the shopping cart function for an E-business shopping system by Struts
This project is a shopping system for an online-trade website of E-commerce. The basic functions have user registration, commodity category, commodity pre-determination, inquiry of purchase information and order confirmation. I was in charge of the programming design of shopping cart using Oracle 9i.
