I am interested in rich multimedia search and just came across a competition being organised in this field, The Star Challenge 2008 @ Fusionopolis is on.

The objective of this technology competition, organized by A*STAR, is to encourage participation from international teams to develop new, interesting and practical search techniques in the field of search engine technology.

Registration for this world-class competition began in January 2008 and is open to top software engineers, leading researchers and search media enthusiasts from around the world.

They are inviting teams from around the world to take part. You could be part of the winning team and walk away with US$100,000 in cash!

This competition consists of 2 main challenges – voice and video search challenges. The former consists of three subtasks; where an example would be to retrieve all segments that contain the query IPA sequence regardless of its spoken languages. The latter also consists of three subtasks; where an example would be to retrieve all visually similar segments from a query provided in the form of a single image.
