Article on data mining

I am looking at writing an article about data mining, but I'd like to get some sort of feel for its growth in recent years. I.e. How many companies/organisations/scientists are using data mining (or business intelligence) and where else it is being used. And possibly, some feel for its impact on adopters (i.e. are they more profitable/more productive)? Given the field's dependence in statistics, info along these line must available somewhere.

Does anybody know where I might find such facts?
