A new Big Data lab called Data Elite was announced on Thursday, backed by Andreessen Horowitz, Joe Lonsdale's Formation8 and a group of other top venture and tech leaders.
The new lab in the SoMa district of San Francisco will nurture between five and 10 Big Data startups at a time, funding them with $150,000 each and providing them with space and mentorship to get started.
"We have managed to put together 12 of the best data scientists in Silicon Valley who will give a minimum of five hours a week of hands on working and consulting with our companies," Stamos Venios, managing director of Data Elite, told me.
They include Ken Rudin, head of analytics at Facebook; Jeff Magnusson, manager of data science platform architecture at Netflix, and Anand Rajaraman, who teaches Stanford University's graduate data mining class and was the founder of Kosmix, which became Walmart Labs in 2011.
