Dell Buys Statsoft to Fill a Data-Mining Void
Dell buys StatSoft, a major provider of statistical, data mining, and text analytics software. Is it filling an important void to help Dell become more of a software company, or an uninspired acquisition?
Dell announced the acquisition of StatSoft, a major provider of statistical, data mining, and text analytics software. Founded in 1984, StatSoft is headquartered in Tulsa, Okla., and operates worldwide through offices and partners in 25 countries. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Dell says in its press release
The acquisition of StatSoft bolsters Dell Software's growing portfolio of information management solutions, while further enhancing the company's open approach to data management. StatSoft adds advanced analytics to a robust set of software capabilities that includes database management and optimization, application and data integration, and big data analytics, all underpinned by Dell's myriad software, storage, server and services offerings and industry relationships.
StatSoft was recently positioned by Gartner, Inc. in the "Challengers" quadrant of the 2014 Magic Quadrant for Advanced Analytics Platforms.
StatSoft approach was rather unique in being inspired by resaearch on Cognitive Mining - see my interview with StatSoft VP Dr. Thomas Hill Cognitive Mining, Data Mining, and StatSoft - here is a quote:
From the perspective of analytic approaches, [human expert] capabilities are accomplished through the repeated application of simple learning algorithms to rich and complex stimuli to identify repeated patterns that allow for accurate expectations and predictions regarding future events and outcomes.
Derrick Harris of GigaOm calls this uninspired acquisition, writing
Dell is trying to remake itself as more of a software company since going private in late 2013, but unless there's something big hiding under the surface, it's hard to see how much an acquisition like StatSoft can really help further that goal.
