Data Science + Criminal Justice

The nation needs brilliant, creative minds to lead the next generation of crime forecasting. Enter the competition sponsored by National Institute of Justice to help improve policing and public safety with data science. $1.2 Million will be awarded.

Crime Forecasting CHALLENGE

The nation needs brilliant, creative minds to lead the next generation of crime forecasting. Through a free and open competition, the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is challenging scientists across all fields to drive innovation in place-based crime forecasting.

NIJ will provide contestants with real-time datasets from one police jurisdiction. Using this data, contestants will develop place-based crime forecasts for that jurisdiction, which will be judged on effectiveness and efficiency. NIJ hopes this competition will inspire innovators like you to think about how algorithms can be adapted to solve criminal justice problems.

Students, professors, entrepreneurs, individuals, and businesses across diverse expertise are invited to compete!

Why compete?
1. Awards totaling $1,200,000 will be made at the conclusion of the challenge.
2. Winners will be recognized as crime-data forecasting leaders in a trending market, and will receive widespread recognition through NIJ's participation in events, such as the International Association of Chiefs of Police Annual Conference and Expo in 2017.
3. As part of the broader scientific community, you can help improve law enforcement agencies' ability to respond to crime using data science innovation.
Join the challenge to improve policing and public safety with data science!
