Postdoctoral Research Associate
Nuclear, Plasma, and Radiological Engineering

We are seeking a postdoctoral research associate who will help us start our work combining radiation detector data with big data analytics. The ideal candidate will bring superior computer science know how to our group working in radiation detection to support a variety of funded projects. It is expected that they will not be a nuclear engineer, but a computer scientist to bring this expertise to our research group.

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree in computer science, computer engineering, data analytics, or a related field
  • Experience working with cloud computing
  • Strong experience working with Hadoop, MapReduce, Pig, Hive, or related tools to big data analytics
  • Superior capabilities in statistical analyses
  • High degree of skill in Java, Python, or R/SAS
  • Proficient in handling both structured and unstructured databases
  • Experience working with very large open-source data sets

Desired Skills and Qualifications
  • Experience with geospatial information systems (GIS)
  • Machine learning
  • Setting up and using an Amazon EC2 Cloud (use of the Government Cloud a plus)
  • Data mining
  • Data fusion
  • Experience in nuclear engineering and radiation detection is NOT required but is a plus

The Postdoctoral Research Associate is a full-time, benefits-eligible position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The initial appointment is for one year with the possibility of extension based on performance and funding. The anticipated start date is Spring 2015, but is negotiable. Applicants may be interviewed before the closing date; however, no hiring decision will be made until after that date. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
