Groupon is looking for a Director of Data Science to lead a talented team of scientists, analysts, and engineers. The Data Science team works on a variety of exciting analytics and modeling projects that have a direct impact on Groupon's business. The ideal candidate will be a strong leader with 10+ years of industry experience focusing on data mining, machine learning, statistics, or the like.
Responsibilities include leading the team to focus on a variety of data analytics and modeling problems including but not limited to:
- Insights: Identify key insights and leverage them to inform and influence product strategy.
- User behavior modeling: Predicting user propensity for click, conversion, and attrition.
- Personalization: Recommendation algorithms leveraged for both users and merchants.
- Forecasting: Modeling historical data to forecast demand, purchase propensity, merchant risk, etc.
- Marketing and CRM: Customer life-stage modeling, large-scale advertising on search engines and social media for customer acquisition and continued engagement.
- Optimization: Large-scale linear and non-linear constrained optimization algorithms for managing the right portfolio of deals in each local market.
Requirements:
- 10+ years of industry experience in data mining, machine learning, statistical analysis, and modeling.
- Prior leadership experience leading technical teams of 10 or more people.
- Technical visionary who is able to guide, mentor, and inspire team members.
- Strong communication skills with ability to drive data driven insights across the organization.
- Keen aptitude for large-scale data analysis with a penchant for identifying key insights from data.
- Hands-on technical expertise including:
- Fluency in programming languages like C/C++/Java and scripting languages like Perl/Python, etc.
- Expertise in analytical tools such as SAS, R, etc.
- Ability to write SQL queries for data analysis on Teradata or similar massively parallel databases.
Education: MS in Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field (Ph.D. preferred).
