Job/Research Summary

NREL's newest building, the Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF) houses research to overcome challenges related to the interconnection of distributed energy systems and the integration of renewable energy technologies into the electricity grid. As part of the ESIF effort, the Computational Science Center has an immediate opening for a Scientific Data Management Technical Lead, tasked with positioning NREL to derive maximum benefit from the diverse data sets generated by ESIF projects, as well as scientific data systems in support of renewable energy research and related applications, potentially to include: computational biology, chemistry, material science, fluid dynamics, structural analysis, engineering analysis, optimization, and resource analysis.

Job Duties
  • Work with Scientific Data Management scientists, software and application programmers, and other stakeholders and renewable energy scientists to specify, design and implement data solutions to critical research issues and to collaborate with NREL researchers on data needs and functionality.
  • Responsible for activities involved in the analysis, design, development, troubleshooting, debugging and maintenance of data system functionality for complex scientific experiments and applications. Job duties will include data system architecture development (big data architectures, structured and unstructured data management systems, and relational database systems), data processing and programming, as well as batch and scripting routines for loading, extracting and moving data.
  • Responsible for formulating and implementing the team's technical data vision, providing hands-on insight into system architecture, big data strategies, data software development and data modeling. Ability to translate high level requirements into detailed database and/or data system designs, and ability to implement complex data projects with a focus on collecting, parsing, managing, analysing and visualizing large sets of data to turn information into insights using multiple platforms.
  • Establish data management systems, standards, guidelines and quality assurance for data deliverables, such as conceptual design, logical data modeling, capacity planning, external data interface specs, data loading, data integration, ETL utilities and data maintenance plans and security policies.
  • Collaborate with developers and facilitate interaction between scientific data management researchers, developers and other stakeholders.
  • Determine appropriateness of data storage, archive, purge and backup strategies.
  • Technology tracking: Evaluate and track technology changes in big data initiatives and developments, database technologies, software development frameworks, data acquisition and storage, and software interfaces to database stores. Reports findings to NREL scientific staff, and assists in assessing the impact of these changes on the evolution of scientific data management and scientific application design at NREL.

Required Education and Experience
  • Relevant PhD or equivalent relevant education/experience.
  • Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.
  • Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Attributes
  • Demonstrates complete understanding and wide application of scientific technical procedures, principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines.
  • Demonstrates leadership in one or more areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Very good technical writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Additional Required Knowledge, Skills and Attributes
  • at least 4 years experience using a major relational database management system such as Oracle, Postgres or SQLServer
  • at least 2 years experience large-scale data processing systems and data warehouse solutions.
  • 1-2 years experience using big data technologies, such as Hadoop-based technologies and NoSQL database technologies
  • Demonstrated experience developing data workflows, metadata requirements gathering, and development of multi-user policy templates for data ownership, lifetime and access.
  • Proficient in designing efficient and robust ETL workflows.
  • Experience in database programming (i.e. functions, integration with external languages, stored procedures, triggers, batch jobs, SQL loader etc).
  • Demonstrated experience programming or scripting loading or extraction routines in Linux/Unix and Windows.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly understand the data structures of multiple systems.
  • Familiar with data product integration into websites and other online tools.
  • Sufficient software engineering expertise to enable big data solutions: object-oriented design, coding and testing patterns; engineering software platforms and large-scale data infrastructures.
  • Experience implementing highly scalable distributed systems, using different open source tools.
  • Experience in big data knowledge discovery techniques such as knowledge-based queries, machine learning approaches, interpretive visualizations.
  • Experience with statistical analysis software and programming languages (R, Java, Matlab).
  • Experience architecting big data solutions which involve multiple capabilities that bridge data platforms of unstructured and semi-structured data with traditional information architectures handling structured data and data warehouses.
  • Ability to decide on the needed hardware and software design needs and act according to the decisions. Ability to develop prototypes and proof of concepts for selected solutions.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master of Science degree (PhD preferred) in Computer Science or Software Engineering, or related discipline and/or 10 years of experience in scientific data management system development, data analysis and data engineering
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in teams and collaborate with others to clarify requirements.
  • Strong coordination and project management skills to handle complex projects.
