The Applied Machine Learning team works on problems across Amazon. From automated targeting to threat detection, our problem space is deep and diverse and we have access to the planet-scale computing resources and datasets required to solve these difficult problems.

As an applied team, we focus on leveraging both the established and state of the art in machine learning research to solve real problems. A key component to our team culture is ownership: we're builders, not consultants.

Role

As a Machine Learning Engineer (MLE) on the Applied Machine Learning team, you'll be part of a highly motivated and independent team that deals with ambiguity every day. It'll be your job to make sense of the inherent ambiguity of the problems you're solving by using your experience, intuition and grit.

You'll fail at lot. That's ok because failure isn't fatal or final. You'll learn from it and add that to your knowledge. The import part is to never get discouraged but instead come up with more experiments or move on if the experimental results warrant it.

You'll be expected to be able to search, read and understand relevant academic papers related to your projects. You'll then analyze your data sets and prototype as many experiments as necessary to converge on the optimal, practical solution. Finally, you'll play a leading role in productionalizing the most promising prototypes. Balancing your time between research, prototyping and actually delivering results is crucial to this role.

Current projects span problems such as content optimization, automated targeting, personalization, anomaly detection, operational issue discovery and threat detection and our mission is simple: Improve the customer experience through the practical application of machine learning.
