Amazon: Sr. Research Scientist, Automated Advertising

Lead projects in algorithmic improvements across key automated advertising problems, including keyword discovery, optimal keyword-to-landing-page mapping, automated ad-copy taxonomy, and continuous feedback bidding algorithms.

Amazon Company: Amazon
Location: Seattle, WA

If you're looking for your next role to be in a team with full ownership over their technical roadmap, dedicated Product Management and Software Development Engineering teams, virtually endless amounts of actionable data, and the ability to influence billions of dollars in revenue, then we are looking for you as well.

The Automated Advertising team is responsible for Amazon's in-house automated Search Engine Marketing platform, which drives all of Amazon's worldwide traffic through pay-per-click advertising on search engines such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo. We operate across a vast problem space, automating and optimizing aspects such as: keyword discovery, optimal keyword-to-landing-page mapping, automated ad-copy taxonomy, and continuous feedback bidding algorithms that forecast the value of clicks across tens of millions of auction keywords.

As a Research Scientist in this team, you will lead projects in algorithmic improvements across all of these areas and continue to raise the bar in the statistical rigor that goes into our automation and predictive models. More importantly, you will assume ownership on delineating the projects that the team should prioritize and leading our R&D efforts.

  • You quantify business impact and deliver/present viable solutions.
  • You develop pragmatic solutions. You design flexible systems and choose simple, straightforward solutions over more unnecessarily complex ones.
  • You understand a broad range of data structures and algorithms and know how, when and when not to use them.
  • You have a strong approach towards design of experiments and evaluating and communicating results in a business environment.

  • Expert knowledge of statistical models, design of experiments, and machine learning models.
  • Hands-on experience with large datasets and building econometric, regression, machine learning, linear optimization, dynamic programing, or similar statistical models.
  • Familiar with standard data structures, computing algorithms, and runtime complexity.
  • Solid organizational skills and attention to detail, able to prioritize and execute on multiple projects.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to communicate complex quantitative analysis to a wide range of audiences, both verbally and in writing.
  • Expert knowledge of Oracle SQL, and R, Stata, or similar analysis tools.

Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Economics or a related field.
  • Basic coding experience or familiarity with scripting languages such as Perl/awk/sed.
  • Experience with large-scale data mining solutions such as Hadoop, Hive, Pig, and Amazon Web Services.
