Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., a Fortune 500 manufacturer of industrial gases and chemicals, has an immediate opening for a LEAD SYSTEMS ENGINEER - Applied Statistics and Data Sciences at our Corporate Headquarters in Allentown, Pennsylvania. This position is located in our Computational Modeling Center (CMC), a technology center-of-excellence providing modeling and analytics solutions for the global organization. CMC is part of Global Technology Centers (GTC) organization which provides shared and connected unique technology resources across the Air Products Enterprise to speed-up technology innovation and problem-solving for our businesses.

The Lead Systems Engineer is a member of a highly specialized staff of professionals who proactively provide mathematical modeling and simulation consulting/analysis services primarily to plant engineers, research scientists, marketing and business managers. This position reports to the Manager of the Computational Modeling Center. The incumbent is responsible for developing, conducting and participating in technical studies involving process/product development or a business decision through the combination of modeling, optimization and computational data-based techniques. The incumbent works independently on key projects, but most often participates in team efforts.

In addition, it is important to seek out new application areas within Air Products, where business needs and modeling capabilities can be brought together profitably and innovatively. A typical project will require the incumbent to understand the flow of a particular chemical or business process, aid in establishing the goals of a study on that system, decide on an appropriate method of analysis, and report the results in a clear fashion. The methodology employed in any particular problem may be a classical one, but often, the problem will dictate the development of a creative methodology which is not found in the literature.

BACKGROUND AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • Position requires a PhD in Chemical / Industrial / Computer Engineering with background in engineering sciences, applied statistics, operations research and computational modeling techniques.
  • 5-10 years of work experience in industrial problem solving with emphasis on analyzing process and business data coming from multiple sources.
  • The incumbent must have strong knowledge of the state-of-the-art methods in data mining, numerical analysis and mathematical optimization, simulation techniques, and statistical sciences.
  • Proficiency with stochastic modeling and optimization techniques for business data mining and reliability engineering along with non-normal statistics.
  • Experience with Design of Experiments (DOE), SIGMA methodology, process monitoring and fault diagnosis technologies and Statistical Quality Control (SQC) is a big plus.
  • Strong programming skills with significant experience in scripting languages R, Python, Java, C++, SQL
  • Proficiency in SAS, MATLAB, GAMS, SPSS and other predictive modeling and optimization platforms
  • Excellent communication skills are a must

 
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Provide integrated consulting services in statistical modeling, numerical analysis and computational engineering sciences to the internal Business, Technology and engineering community.
2. Perform applied research on new engineering modeling capabilities for process, product and business improvement and coordinate the introduction of pertinent technologies.
3. Develop mathematical models, solve numerical problems, write specific code as needed, and effectively perform applications testing to ensure robust performance. 4. Work on large-scale data analysis and develop predictive models based on regression, classification, machine learning and time series, etc. approaches in both simulation and optimization frameworks.
5. Derive actionable insights and Communicate results to a wide audience in a manner that the solution strategy and business impact are readily understood. Drive business decision-making based on modeling and analysis.
6. Teach in-house courses on topics including, DOE, Regression Analysis, Multivariate Quality Control.
7. Work with universities and external research organizations as required.
