The Mind Research Network (MRN) and the Lovelace Scientific Research (LSR) divisions of Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute are looking for a driven and visionary team leader for the inaugural position of President and CEO of our data science division, mapropos ( ).

The overall role of this person will be to head up a new for profit endeavor focused on providing data analytic services to industry and government. The position entails the hiring of experienced staff and the integration of them and the company into the existing large bioanalytic/image analysis team headed by Dr. Vince Calhoun in Albuquerque.

The mission of this new entity will be to navigate clients through the data-landscape revealing the essence of their data in clear, intuitive and informative representations/maps that greatly simplify decision making. Mapropos is an outward facing unit designed to engage clients, develop business opportunities, and to leverage, the many existing skills capabilities and personnel already present at MRN. Although this team has been forged in the quest for understanding the most complex system known, the brain, they are moving to expand their capabilities into many commercial realms. Mapropos provides the businesses community and government with a unique access to a growing internationally recognized, scientifically rigorous and agile data-science team.

The President/CEO of mapropos will be a distinguished PhD-level scientist with a background in machine learning, engineering, data science, or related field dedicated to business development and scholarly, programmatic, and institutional innovation. This individual is responsible for organizational leadership, fiscal health, and the extension of mapropos's vision, mission, and goals at the highest level. This individual is also responsible for defining organizational and programmatic direction and communicating the goals, mission, accomplishments, and research findings of the organization and its programs.

As a respected and creative intellectual, the President/CEO will further develop the mission and vision of mapropos and make strategic decisions about team building and engagement with clients. This includes a) hiring and mentoring a team of professional data scientists, software engineers, and imaging specialists at MRN in order to maximize synergy and responsiveness; b) supporting staff in raising program-specific funds and achieving programmatic goals and c) developing new initiatives.

The President/CEO reports to the President of LRRI (Dr. Robert Rubin) and the MRN Executive Science Officer (Dr. Vince Calhoun) who for this purpose report to the LSR Board of Directors.

The President/CEO is expected to be familiar with the following skill sets:

1) Machine learning/data-mining (an understanding of how to use algorithms to make sense of data) which includes experience in supervised learning: classification in particular, experience in unsupervised learning: clustering methods and dimensionality reduction, and experience with graphical models: either graph analysis, probabilistic graphical models or spectral approaches. Additional domains which we expect to work with include text mining/natural language processing, time series modeling, artificial neural networks and other deep learning approaches.

2) Software engineering (a basic understanding of how to build tools to work with and visualize data) includes experience working with and processing data in various tools for developing, processing and visualization (e.g. python, R, Matlab, grep, sed, awk, bash, xargs, html5, css, javascript, inkscape, gimp, matplotlib, imagemagick, etc) and also experience in building web applications including prototyping of data intensive apps and building of interactive pages filled with infographics.

3) Communication includes the ability to identify, attract, and interact with clients. It also includes an ability to communicate powerfully via data, for example experience with building complex infographics to provide a convincing narrative about what the data holds. We also expect this individual to have experience in giving convincing public talks targeted towards domain experts, to those outside the field, and to the general public.
