Corporate Transformation: Schlumberger is embarking on a multi-year corporate transformation. Objectives of the transformation include step changes in productivity and operational efficiency. Building a strong data and analytic competency across the company is a strong part of operating as a digital organization that is well positioned to compete and deliver on these productivity gains. The scope encompasses both business and operational data and having an analytics strategy around both is required.


The Schlumberger Advanced Analytics team has an opening in Houston Texas for Senior data scientists who will be responsible for working with the data and business intelligence resources to build and deliver analytics capabilities to the business segments and support the business and IT transformation.

  • Develop & deploy modern machine learning and statistical methods (CART and Random Forests, clustering and classification algorithms, Bayesian models, neural nets, SVM etc.), ensemble methods etc. for finding patterns/models from business and operational data. Familiarity with large data sets, R, Hadoop, Python etc. and other open source stack elements and frameworks and experience in putting an intelligent application in production is desirable. Experience with enterprise systems like SAS and SAP is also a plus.

  • Independently perform in-depth investigations of data problems employing statistical skills and developing predictions.
  • Develop and deliver synthesized predictive research findings that incorporate multiple business operational databases and provide tangible business insight.
  • Use analytics and data to understand business KPIs and develop ways to extend them towards increasing fidelity or insight.
  • Work collaboratively across multi-functional teams focused on enterprise data, data quality, business intelligence, operational data and enterprise resource planning integration to deliver innovation based on data driven insights.

External Presence
  • Engage with the external technical and business community to brand and differentiate analytics in Schlumberger.
  • Participate in technical and recruiting forums and other appropriate events to make Schlumberger analytics a recognized and preferred choice for top analytics talent.


  • Masters Degree in a quantitative discipline like Engineering, Statistics, Information Sciences.
  • (Desirable) PhD in a quantitative discipline.
  • Minimum of 7 years experience post a Masters degree. Minimum of 3 years experience post PhD.
  • (Desirable) Prior leadership experience with analytic teams.
  • Excellent communication, verbal and written skills

Key Competencies in Data Science Technologies:
  • Experience with Big Data analytics stack technologies and tools. R, Hadoop, Spark, Python etc.
  • Experience with essential statistical and machine learning algorithms, including classification. Regression, clustering, statistical learning, ensemble methods.

  • Exposure to putting analytics in production. Experience in Software Development or IT
  • Experience with agile methodologies for delivering analytics outcomes.
  • Comfortable with entering into ambiguously defined business problem statements and reducing them to tangible outputs.
  • Comfortable with interpreting the outcomes of data analysis objectively to management and technical stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of Oilfield terminology and business practices.
