Overview:
This is an opportunity to be a key member of Bain's expanding advanced analytics capability area. This position will be part of the Advanced Analytics Group (Bain's team of advanced analytics and primary research experts).
Responsibilities:
- Responsibilities will include a mix of Data Science and Advanced Analytics skills.
DATA SCIENCE:
- Working with Bain consultants and Advanced Analytics experts to define data requirements and plan data acquisition
- Working with consultants and clients to extract very large data sets from client and third party sources (structured and unstructured) and then transfer & load the data onto Bain data servers
- Facilitating data merging and transformation in preparation for analysis by planning the process and either executing directly or training consultants to implement directly
- Assist lead Data Scientist in designing and implementing the data architecture, analytics environment, and best practices for analyzing very large data sets
ADVANCED ANALYTICS:
- Provide analytic consulting to Bain case teams and clients worldwide. The Senior Specialist will work with case teams to assess data needs and propose analytical solutions to provide practical, value-added answers to the client and case teams.
- Recommend and explain research methods and analytical techniques appropriate for targeting and segmenting markets, product design, marketing optimization, demand forecasting and brand valuation, profit and price analyses, and territory optimization.
- Design sample specifications that will deliver actionable information.
- Conduct advanced statistical analyses: Explain and perform a variety of statistical and data mining techniques including discrete choice/conjoint analysis, latent class and other clustering techniques, maximum difference scaling, multivariate and logistic regressions, decision trees (e.g. CHAID/CART), and factor and correspondence/MDS analysis.
- Train and coach consultants on basic statistical and analytical procedures
- The person in this role will need the ability to:
- Communicate effectively with analytics/data experts, business leaders, and executives inside and outside of Bain to assess opportunities and develop data driven solutions for Bain clients across a variety of sectors;
- Translate business objectives into data and analytics solutions using appropriate data engineering, analytics, visualization & dashboard applications;
- Design, execute and direct data engineering and analytics solutions;
- Communicate with and educate both senior and junior colleagues to further embed data science and analytics across the firm;
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or higher in a quantitative discipline such as Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, Econometrics or information sciences such as business analytics or informatics.
- 3+ years experience in data mining, large scale data acquisition, transformation, and cleaning, both structured and unstructured data and/or advanced analytics.
- 5-10 years of experience in a business, market research or social science environment without a Masters Degree, or 3+ years experience with a Masters Degree or Ph.D.
- SQL expertise required; Data modeling experience a plus
- Strong experience with ETL design and implementations in the context of large datasets
- Experience with ETL tools (e.g., Informatica, DataStage, SSIS, Talend, Pentaho Kettle, Redpoint)
- Demonstrated experience with database technologies (e.g. Oracle, SAP, DB2, Teradata, MS SQL Server, Vertica, Greenplum, SAP HANA, MySQL)
- Experience with statistical analysis software (e.g. R, SPSS, SAS, RapidMiner)
- Familiarity with Business Intelligence tools a plus (e.g. Cognos, Qlikview, Tableau, Tibco, MicroStrategy)
- Experience with Hadoop ecosystem (e.g., HBase, Pig, Hive) a plus
- Experience with NoSQL database technologies (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra, CouchDB) a plus
- Experience with cloud computing a plus
- Experience with Python, PHP, Java, Ruby, and Visual Basic a plus
- Excellent oral and written communication skills a must.
- Ability to collaborate with people at all levels and with multi-office/region teams.
- Must thrive in a fast paced environment and be able to work independently.
- Some travel required.
