Job Summary (Primary purpose of this Role):

John Hancock's Insurance division (a Division of Manulife) has traditionally focused on affluent and emerging affluent individuals by providing estate and business planning solutions through an array of innovative life insurance products. The position of AVP, Advanced Analytics plays a key leadership role developing and executing the Insurance division's business strategy. The successful candidate will bring their innovation, critical thinking, influencing, industry and functional expertise leveraged through advanced analytics and predictive modeling to drive key areas that include but not limited to: Strategy, Marketing, Distribution, Underwriting, In-Force Management and Claims

This position reports to the SVP, Strategy and Marketing, John Hancock Insurance. The AVP, Advanced Analytics will further define the Insurance Advanced Analytics vision and charter and build the teams capabilities. The AVP will hire, develop and lead a team of up to 6 directs and/or indirect reports.

Key Accountabilities:

Data Analytics:
  • Directs the strategic design, development and delivery of ideas, programs and projects using advanced analytics and predictive modeling.
  • Serves as an "analytics champion and advocate" for the enterprise educating internal key stakeholders on the impact of applying advanced analytics and predicative modeling.
  • Identifies opportunities across the enterprise and its lines of business to strategically leverage analytics. Advises senior management and key stakeholders including ensuring all parties understand outcomes, capabilities, risks, and limitations. Develops and recommends mitigation plans.
  • Directs the technical design discussions on projects. Ensures requirements are translated, formatted and integrated into project design and understood by key stakeholders.
  • Directs and establishes metrics supporting his/her area of responsibility.

 
Operational Excellence:
  • Provides strategic direction to build and enhance the advanced analytics capability for the division
  • Directs and enhances organizational initiatives by positively influencing outcomes.
  • Identifies and directs strategic process improvements that significantly drive sales, improve mortality, increase saving and quality across the team, department and/or business unit for assigned area(s) of responsibility.

 
Technical Knowledge:
  • Maintains knowledge on current and emerging developments and trends in the analytics space. Assess the impact, and collaborates with senior management to incorporate new trends and developments in current and future strategies.
  • Provides subject matter expertise and key business insight to team members and applicable internal/external stakeholders on complex assignments/projects for his/her assigned area(s) of responsibility.

 
Project Management:
  • Provides effective project management leadership for advanced analytics and predictive modeling integration and implementation across Insurance, its functions and the Division. Directs and develops project teams and serves as senior level management contact for all development issues, resolving technical issues timely and collaborating with key stakeholders to enhance business outcomes.
  • Provide business requirements, and integration plans to ensure analytics project and implemented with ease

 
Leadership:
  • Set the vision for the team. Ensure the vision aligns to the business priorities and the organization around the vision.
  • Lead, manage, develop and motivate individuals and collectively a high performing team in a rapidly changing, fast paced environment.
  • Provide business key insights and intelligence to stakeholders. Develop, prioritize and "sell" recommendations to key decision makers

 
Job Requirement:
  • 15+ years of increasing experience of data mining, modeling and strategy design that directly align to the responsibilities of this position.
  • Knowledge of technology solutions used in the development and deployment of advanced analytics functions
  • Sound knowledge of "Big Data" concepts.
  • A demonstrated track record of consistently meeting and/or exceeding performance expectations.
  • Knowledge of key players in the analytics space including vendors and consultants as well as best practices used by competition or adjacent industries,
  • Advanced degrees in statistics, math or business (MBA) an asset
