Damballa Labs is a team of leading experts in network security and criminal infrastructure. Using applied scientific research and leveraging data collected from sensors monitoring millions of hosts, we discover new and innovative ways to stay ahead of cyber crime activity. We refine our ideas and intuitions by studying the techniques employed by real criminal botnet operators to control and monetize their victims.

As a Research Scientist, you will have the opportunity to work at the intersection of network security and data science using massive datasets, e.g. DNS, netflow, DPI, proprietary network security data, etc. You will have the chance to get involved in a fast-paced working environment (with strong ties to academia) that encourages innovative ideas and critical thinking to design and develop cutting - edge research solutions. You will be able to work independently and lead a research project, while interacting with other teams of experts in the field of network security. You will gain significant hands - on experience in all stages of innovating ideas, e.g. idea generation, prototyping, conducting experiments, patents, research publications, productizing.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Research and prototype new methods for detecting and annotating botnet activities.
  • Development of statistical models for distinguishing malicious from benign content or usage.
  • Design and conduct experiments to measure efficacy and accuracy of algorithms.
  • Development of tools to process massive sets of data to derive statistical information.
  • Contribution to research and commercial papers describing the evolving botnet threat.

 
REQUIREMENTS
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent field or experience.
  • Strong familiarity with applied machine learning.
  • Knowledge in the areas of networking and/or security. Experience using network or security tools/data a plus.
  • Proven ability to generate new ideas and innovations.
  • Ability to take ownership of a project and work independently to produce results as well as on teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Coding/Scripting experience in at least one of the following: Python, Ruby, Java, C, Clojure, R.
  • Proficient on UNIX--based systems.
