Overview:
Macy's / Macys.com is seeking an experienced executive with strong management, team-building, marketing, site, consumer and business analytics experience. This position is ideal for a seasoned executive looking to work with experienced online marketing, analytics, site management, merchant, product management and finance professionals in a high-performance, results driven environment.

The Vice President of Marketing Data Science and Analytics is responsible for informing business and marketing strategy, guiding tactical execution and identifying new opportunities to drive and grow sales across Macy's Inc. Overseeing marketing analytics, business analytics and digital analytics, this role leads the team responsible for enabling and empowering the Macy's Marketing Team with Quantitative Data Analysis, Reporting and Data Visualization, Deep Actionable Insights, Modeling, Algorithm Design and Advanced Test Plan Design and Analysis.

The VP is charged with driving day to day productivity in execution as well as aligning the teams around broader opportunities and strategies through the compelling and clear delivery of analysis and insights. In addition, this role is responsible for developing progressive analytic strategies, multi-platform thought leadership, and for driving competitive advantage through leading and emerging analytic solutions and approaches to data.

Essential Functions:

Marketing and Business Analytics
  • Planning, forecasting and reporting across marketing tactics, device usage, family of business sales mix, offer and daily event marketing calendar. Apply simulation, trending and data driven approaches to identify risks and opportunities, guide execution and support the predictable delivery of business results. Support monetization efforts through content and performance modeling, iterative testing and analysis.
  • Be able to not only answer "how is business" but be able to answer why the business is performing as it is across lenses of marketing, event calendar, and promotion.
  • Consistently apply a Macy's Inc. omni-channel lens to analysis and insights.
  • Drive alignment and consistency in marketing and media effectiveness approaches across Macy's Inc. incl. assessment of incrementality.
  • Maximize profitability and sales growth through program enhancements, intelligent analytics (incl. multi touch attribution and cross channel behavior / influence) and closed loop tactical optimization / automation.
  • Apply understanding of the company's business strategies, competitive environment and industry trends to educate and guide both strategic and tactical decisions with guidance framed by impact of recommendations on various departments.

 
Digital Analytics
  • Planning, modeling and reporting for digital activity across device, location and context, functionality and services and shopping experience. Support and guide capital portfolio and product management teams in opportunity identification, instrumentation and analysis.

 
Experimentation Services
  • For larger integrated and coordinated tests, help prioritize, develop test plan, apply consistent and rigorous analytic standards across experiments, analyze and coordinate test evaluation.

 
Leadership
  • Foster a focused and pragmatic approach to use advanced analytics and new technologies to drive productivity, sales and a superior business result.
  • Lead the development and application of advanced, scalable approaches to media optimization and business planning.Drive key tactic, sales and efficiency KPI's.
  • Develop an analytics organization across advanced analytics and traditional analytics that is future looking, adaptive and innovative. Guide and prioritize work of the team based on organizational readiness and benefit.
  • Collaborate with other areas of the Macys and analytical leaders to share and bring best practices as well as maximize the scope and benefit delivered
  • Bring industry leading and best of breed approaches, methodologies and technologies to Macy's (including building roadmap and vision for analytics solutions, data and processes.) Work closely with marketing solutions and technical teams to integrate algorithms and approaches into production analytic and delivery mechanisms.
  • Focus on sustainable growth to deliver the best balanced business result and maximize sales. Identify and champion opportunities and approaches to support.
  • Drive continuous optimization and learning through ongoing and consistently integrated experimentation / testing. Socialize and incorporate learning's from post campaign closed loop post mortem and analytic program evaluation.

 
Team Management
  • Guide, develop and support team. Establish clear objectives and framework to achieve across each team member. Recognize and develop talent.
  • Hire, develop and retain a high performing team of 20+ individuals.
  • Foster and inspire a culture of innovation, collaboration, intense curiosity and a drive to "be the best."
  • Balance work and deliverable demands (reactive) with a focus on proactive analysis. Put effort and resources on highest impact topics. Open up bandwidth by regularly identifying what not to do.
  • Provide team with a clear sense of objective, ownership and accountability and a solid understanding of how what they do fits into the broader strategy of Macy's.
  • Ensure processes and organizational structure meet evolving needs and objectives.
  • Develop/mentor team and monitor project progress and work-flow to assure achievement of delivery commitments. Provide guidance to successfully work across departments.

 
Qualifications:
  • Education/Experience: Master's Degree in Economics, Econometrics, Operations Research, Applied Statistics or other Quantitative field required; Ph.D. Preferred
  • 8+ years' experience in a leadership role in Analytics / Applied Advanced Analytics with a focus on marketing, retail and new technologies in the digital space
  • Communication Skills: Persuasive and consumable presentation of analytic results and recommendations. Ability to communicate complex concepts and share insights in an audience aware fashion.
  • Mathematical Skills: Proven ability to leverage data, quantitative analysis and advanced analytics to deliver actionable insights, guide strategic decisions and directly drive business results.
  • Experience with large data sets and advanced analytical tools. Practical (vs. academic) experience / working knowledge of mathematical optimization, quantitative modeling, simulation techniques, probability, econometrics and statistics and how to apply to business applications.
  • Reasoning Ability: Experience delivering insight to internal or external business owners by building on a technical foundation that includes an understanding of modeling techniques and a strong grasp of statistics utilizing SAS, R or SPSS packages.
  • Physical Demands: This position is located in San Francisco, CA with team located in San Francisco and New York. Some travel required.
  • Other skills: Self-driven innovative strategic thinker who is resourceful and has the ability to look beyond existing business and technology limitations. Ability to persuade, influence, and execute innovative methods and processes.
  • Strong leadership skills with a cross-platform mentality and approach. Ability to motivate, influence, collaborate and work in partnership within team as well as across the organization. .
  • Demonstrated success in leading and developing managers, senior staff and high performance teams.
  • Proven competence in delivering in parallel across multiple projects and ability to prioritize resource allocation based on business needs and ROI, meet tight deadlines, and be decisive under pressure.
  • Ability to take high level objectives and leverage data and analytics to draw out insights carried through to execution / optimization.
  • Understanding of the objectives and success metrics across Marketing, Merchandising, Operations, Site Management, Finance and Planning teams and ability to apply that knowledge to analysis and recommendations (to frame application).
