Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director leads Data Systems Infrastructure, which serves the operational information needs and facilitates strategic analytics to support Columbia College and its units, which serve students in multiple schools including Columbia College and The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science. The Director works closely with the Executive Director to identify, coordinate, and prioritize needs and manage various projects.


A. Data Management, Reporting, and Analysis

1. Build and maintain databases and automate data processes for in-house and third-party databases, including ETL, SQL, stored procedures, SSRS, SSIS, etc..

2. Create user friendly, front end reporting tools and platforms that provide point and click ability to produce reports, for operational and analysis needs.

3. Evaluate large data sets and facilitate processes that translate data into actionable insights in order to solve problems, provide insight, and optimize processes.

4. Provide guidance on and participate in research, survey analysis, and assessment and identify topics for analysis that drive decision making for all units within Columbia College. Facilitate designs, execution, and reporting on research findings for use in strategic planning and policy development/implementation.

5. Engineer, implement, and document process for data collection, design, use, and reporting.

6. Create reports and datasets in response to requests from various departments in Columbia College including reporting for various student survey instruments and office projects.

B. Strategic Planning

1. Work with Executive Director to plan short and long-term strategic initiatives in developing and implementing data and analysis strategy plan for Columbia College and develop strategic initiatives around research design, analysis and reporting. Work with the Executive Director and team on research, assessment, reporting, modeling projects, focus groups and all surveys and other research tools.

2. Develop measurement and metrics systems to assess and report performance of processes, projects, and solutions. Identify areas of improvement and opportunity. Develop and implement process improvement strategies.

C. Data Integrity and Security

1. Work with University offices to ensure that data which flows to and from the various units is accurately collected, disseminated, and analyzed.

2. Develop business procedures and reports, and processes to verify the integrity of information and ensure data security and integrity.

3. Work with functional units and University partners to facilitate centralization of processes to steward data and promote responsible usage.

D. Partner with Columbia College IT to meet and improve the data and analysis needs of Columbia College.

E. Work on special projects as deemed relevant, be available as needed for technical and other support during critical periods, and perform other related duties as assigned.

Incumbent reports directly to the Executive Director and provides direct supervision and training for 3 full-time officers.

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • A minimum of 4-6 years of relevant experience required in data management, reporting and analysis.
  • Proficiency in SQL required. Experience with Crystal Reports, SQL Server Reporting Services, or other enterprise level reporting tool is preferred.
  • Expertise with database design, Visual Basic, relational database software or equivalent, student information or related system, Microsoft SQL Server strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of an object-oriented language such as Java, C++ or C# desirable.Knowledge of statistics desirable and a preference for experience and familiarity with research/assessment.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and projects under short and changing deadlines, while ensuring accuracy.
  • Proven ability to create, implement, and manage project plans and successfully complete projects.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, organizational and interpersonal skills required; ability to analyze and interpret complex data sets, make findings relevant, and explain data and technology to a general (non-technical) audience.
  • Must be an innovative and analytical thinker who has the ability to work both independently, as well as, collaboratively.
  • Must be able to exercise sound judgment, strategic thinking, and discretion and tact in a highly confidential and professional setting.
  • Strong preference for supervisory experience and experience with managing change.
