Position Description:
The Director, Business Analytics Graduate Programs is responsible for the overall quality, enrollment, and success of the MS and certificate programs in Business Analytics at the Orfalea College of Business. This person will be a key participant of the administrative leadership team for graduate programs and will report directly to the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs. The position is a 12-month, 1.0 FTE.

Direct MS and certificate programs in Business Analytics
  • Lead the recruitment and admissions process.
  • Plan and deliver an orientation for entering students.
  • Coordinate scheduling of the MS and certificate programs in Business Analytics classes.
  • Advise students regarding course selection and career opportunities.
  • Work with faculty members to ensure cooperation and integration across concurrent and sequential courses.
  • Work with the Director of Assessment to plan, implement and close the loop for assurance of learning processes for the MS and certificate programs in Business Analytics.
  • Work with the graduate program staff to ensure a quality experience for the students.
  • Monitor program quality by conducting exit surveys.
  • Provide leadership for the curricular revisions of the MS and certificate programs in Business Analytics.
  • Plan and deliver a quality graduation ceremony in cooperation with other OCOB graduate programs.

Market MS and certificate programs in Business Analytics
  • Provide leadership for the marketing efforts of the MS and certificate programs in Business Analytics.
  • Function as an advocate and spokesperson for the MS and certificate programs in Business Analytics.
  • Participate in updating the OCOB website, relevant online databases, etc.
  • Serve as the academic representative at information sessions, orientation, graduation, alumni events and other events as appropriate.
  • Represent the MS and certificate programs in Business Analytics in the regional business community.

Develop Industry Relationships
  • Consult with the business analytics advisory board members and other data analytics professionals.
  • Participate in the business analytics advisory board meetings.
  • Actively seek data projects and internships for the MS in Business Analytics students.
  • Organize Business Analytics Symposia.

Teaching Responsibilities
  • Assignment may include appropriate teaching responsibilities for which incumbent is qualified and interested (typically would not exceed three courses annually)
  • Teaching responsibilities, if applicable, require maintaining currency in the area of teaching assignment, as required by the AACSB

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):

  • Master's degree in a field closely related to business analytics. Candidates with a bachelor's degree with substantial experience in the field of business analytics may be considered.
  • Three or more years of work experience in business analytics or related field.

Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.

  • Knowledge of or ability to learn database, query, and reporting applications, e-mail, and calendaring systems.
  • Knowledge of the financial structure of program; Knowledge of marketing strategies.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
  • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.

  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment fingerprint/background check. May be required to complete a Supplemental Employment Application Questionnaire, which contains questions pertaining to conviction history, and submit it when requested by Cal Poly.   • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
  • This position classification has been defined as "Exempt" and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
  • Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
