Job Description
The Boeing Company is seeking a Data Architect to create scalable data platforms that enable research and development (R&D) supporting commercial and defense programs. As a development lead for the team, this candidate must possess strong, hands-on technical expertise in big data technologies with an ability to work with diverse group of team members.

The successful candidate will become part of our growing Boeing Research & Technology Team in Huntsville, AL and work in the new Center for Applied Simulation and Analytics (CASA) Lab.

The Data Architect will help design and develop Big Data Databases, Data Models, ETL processes, Data Warehouse, and Analytics applications through the use of best practices and tools that support the Analytics and Simulation Technology research and development projects.

The Data Architect will work with project teams and customers to identify requirements, perform research and implements technology solution options to achieve business needs. They will research and recommend new software products as well as orchestrate technical innovations for the aerospace industry.

The Data Architect will work in the CASA data lab pathfinding state-of-the-art capabilities in the Big Data domain. They will set up environments and enable researchers to use Big Data sets on multiple projects (3 to 5 a year) and will establish capability to stand up a new environment within days.

The Data Architect must be able to develop open architectures using a variety of open source technologies for data pipeline applications. They must have experience outside of PL/SQL, Microsoft .NET, or the Oracle stack.

This is a R&D position/environment and is not an Enterprise Architecture position.

Qualifications:
This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a "US Person" as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required.

Our organization partners with Boeing business units to advance towards widespread application of modeling, simulation, and analytics across the lifecycle of our aerospace and defense products. Our research and development projects provide Boeing employees with better knowledge and tools increasing the value of our products and services. Projects include sponsors in Boeing Commercial Airplanes and Boeing Defense, Space & Security.

A successful candidate will be able to work in the dynamic and distributed BR&T environment. An employee will typically work on multi-year projects that end with capability transitions. Project work can be funded by Independent Research and Development, Internal Application Development, Contracted Research and Development, or support to a Business Unit.

An employee will work on a small project teams where the knowledge and abilities of each person is important. The work is often simply described and the employee needs to be self-directed to organize and perform the work. Collaboration with others is important to successful project performance as is good communication with the project manager, principal investigator, and sponsor. An employee is typically hands-on, likes to figure things out, enjoys learning new things, and is good at applying what they have learned.

Applicants must have experience delivering complex data solutions with comprehension in areas such as Architecture, Configuration, Performance, Scalability, Reliability, and Infrastructure. The successful candidate should be able to communicate well with other Software Engineers, Data Analysts, User Experience Professionals, Graphic Artists, and other members of our diverse team.

Desired Skills:
  • Utilizes an understanding of systems, database and networking with crossover skills to assist the design and implementation in custom solutions.
  • Knowledge of machine learning and statistics and the ability to work with experts in these disciplines.
  • Experience with building data driven products for multiple concurrent R&D projects.
  • Proven programming & technical skills in Java, Python, Hadoop, MapReduce, SQL, Storm, Spark, Splunk and other state-of-the-art languages.

 
Desired Education/Experience:

Level 4: Technical bachelor's degree and typically 9 or more years' related work experience or a Master's degree with typically 7 or more years' or a PhD degree with typically 4 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A technical degree is defined as any four year degree, or greater, in a mathematic, scientific or information technology field of study.

Level 5: Technical bachelor's degree and typically 14 or more years' related work experience or a Master's degree with typically 12 or more years' or a PhD degree with typically 9 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A technical degree is defined as any four year degree, or greater, in a mathematic, scientific or information technology field of study.
