# Geisinger Health System: Senior Data Scientist

Geisinger Division of Applied Research and Clinical Informatics (DARCI), Department of Data Science is seeking a researcher with a strong background in applied mathematics or computer science, and active interest in multidisciplinary studies in social/life sciences.

A senior data scientist will work as a part of a research team tasked with integrating complex data sets and implementing data analysis methods to support the needs of modern healthcare. This includes: predicting risk, optimizing resource allocation for patient care, quantifying individual and societal impact of healthcare, defining and improving metrics of quality for medical practices, integrating socioeconomic, traditional clinical and molecular data for comprehensive modelling of patient conditions, developing computational models at scale.

**Academic research duties:**

- Development of publishable research, submission to peer-reviewed journals in mathematics, computer science, medical informatics
- Participation in scientific and industry conferences
- Participation in grant application process
- Mentoring of team members, supervision of early career collaborators and interns

**Software development duties:**

- Development and validation of novel computational algorithms
- Interaction with dedicated programming workforce, joint development of useable software packages

Proficiency with the theory and applications of mathematical methods in predictive analytics, including familiarity with some of the following, and specialization in one of more of the following topics:

- Statistics and probability theory, including hypothesis testing, regression, forecasting, risk modelling, Bayesian inference, stochastic processes, Markov chains, methods of nonparametric statistics.
- Approximation theory, convergence properties
- Numerical optimization methods
- First-principles modelling (conservation laws, dynamical systems, differential equations, elements of: differential geometry, game theory, network modelling)
- Factor analysis, data compression, dimensionality reduction

**Requirements:**

- Experience with Matlab, R, Python, Sage, SPSS, SAS
- Experience with scripting languages : C++, Java, Ruby, Perl
- Ph.D. is preferred but strong candidates with a Master's degree will also be considered. Two or more years of postdoctoral research experience or industry experience are strongly preferred.
- A degree in mathematics (pure or applied), computer science, computer engineering (or other relevant engineering discipline), or physics is required.
